Milkyway@home - Server Outages

Détails
Hi Everyone,

I'll be working for the rest of the night to try to resolve the large number of workunits waiting for validation. This will involve the server going up and down for maintenance, and certain processes may be turned off for periods of time tonight. I'm hoping that things are resolved tonight, but it is definitely possible that things may not be resolved by tomorrow.

Thanks for you patience and support!

Milkyway@home - Planned Deprecation of TLS 1.0/1.1

Détails
To Sum Up: Older machines/BOINC clients may encounter issues after 12/17/2021. In order to prevent this, update your BOINC client to at least 7.210 by then, as well as your OpenSSL and curl libraries if necessary.

Hey Everyone,

We recently renewed the cert for the server, and we realized that the server is still supporting TLS 1.0/1.1. These services are out of date and are security hazards. We are going to end support for these services as of Friday, December 17, 2021.

What does this mean for you as a user?

Older clients may still be using old versions of SSL that need TLS 1.0 or 1.1. Once we stop supporting these services, these older clients may encounter issues when trying to communicate and/or get work from the MilkyWay@home server. In order to prevent this, you should update to at least the 7.210 BOINC client.

Additionally, some libraries rely on old versions of TLS. The most common of these are old versions of OpenSSL and curl. If you are running old versions of these libraries, it may be time to update them. Other libraries might also cause issues, so we will keep track of any problems that people run into here.

Overall these issues are relatively easy to fix and should only impact older systems, especially those that have not updated their libraries or BIONC clinets in a long time.

Best,
Tom

LHC@home - Lack of CMS tasks due to a problem in WMAgent development

Détails
Unfortunately, I have been unable to submit new workflows to the CMS project since yesterday, and the job queues have now drained.
The cause is a change introduced in the development of the CMS work-flow management system. These changes are tested first on a development system before being moved to the production system. We currently use the development system to run CMS@Home, so the change is impacting us.
I'm trying to find out when a fix will be forthcoming, but until then set No New Tasks for CMS or switch to another project.
I'm sorry about this. I will let you know when I am able to submit jobs again.

Milkyway@home - News General

Détails
Hey Everyone,

I think that it would be useful to have a general thread in News for random problems or notices that don't relate to any other thread, or don't require their own thread. Recently we've been using the Validator Outage thread for this, but it's better to have a designated place for it.

Feel free to post comments/concerns/general project status-related thoughts on this thread.

Best,
Tom

PrimeGrid - PRS Prime Find!

Détails
On 18 September 2021, 06:50:25 UTC, PrimeGrid’s Primorial Prime Search, through PRPNet found the mega prime: 3267113#-1 The prime is 1,418,398 digits long and will enter Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database ranked 1st for Primorial primes and 286th overall. The discovery was made by James Winskill (Aeneas) of New Zealand using an Intel(R) Xeon(R) W-2125 CPU @ 4.00GHz with 64GB RAM running Windows 10. This computer took 20 hours 32 minutes to complete the prp test using pfgw64. James Winskill is a member of the PrimeSearchTeam. The prp was verified on 26 September 2021, 01:56:46 UTC by an Intel i7-7700K @ 4.2 GHz with 16 GB RAM, running Gentoo/Linux. This computer took a little over 5 days 8 hours 38 minutes to verify primality of the prp using pfgw64. For more details, please see the official announcement.
